  1. 1869-1954. French painter, sculptor,
  2. illustrator, and designer; on of the most
  3. original creative forces in early
  4. 20th-century art. His work concentrates on
  5. designs that emphasize curvaceous surface
  6. patterns, linear arabesques, and brilliant
  7. colour. Subjects include odalisques (women of
  8. the harem), bathers, and dancers; later works
  9. include pure abstracts, as in his collages of
  10. coloured paper shapes and the designs 1949-51
  11. for the decoration of a chapel for the
  12. Dominican convent in Vence, near Nice. In
  13. 1904 Matisse worked with Signac in the south
  14. of France in a Neo-Impressionist style. The
  15. following year he was the foremost of the
  16. Fauve painters exhibiting at the Salon
  17. d'Automne, painting with bold brushstrokes,
  18. thick paint, and strong colours. He soon
  19. abandoned conventional perspective in his
  20. continued experiments with colour, and in
  21. 1910 an exhibition of Islamic art further
  22. influenced him towards the decorative. He
  23. settled in the south of France in 1914. His
  24. murals of The Dance 1932-33 (Barnes
  25. Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania) are
  26. characteristic.
